Emma Thompson, Alan Rickman, Kate Winslet and Hugh Grant star in this captivating romantic comedy that swept the Ten Best Lists and was named the Best Picture of the Year by the Golden Globes®. Based on Jane Austen’s classic novel, SENSE AND SENSIBILITY tells of the Dashwood sisters, sensible Elinor (Thompson) and passionate Marianne (Winslet), whose chances at marriage seem doomed by their family’s sudden loss of fortune. Rickman, Grant and Greg Wise co-star as the well-intentioned suitors who are trapped by the strict rules of society and the conflicting laws of desire.

  1. Hugh Laurie impressed me so much in this. His role was so tiny, but every moment he was on screen he was perfect!

  2. Damn the English are selfish and greedy and pretentious that house is plenty big enough for the entire family to live there.. why on earth would fanny and John just kick them out after their father died?!?! How incredibly heartless… it's a MASSIVE house .. it could house 50 people

  3. The pace, dialogue, drama and emotional impact of Thompson’s incredible screenplay is second to nothing I’ve ever seen. Flat out genius.

  4. One of my absolute favorite movies. Brilliant casting. Emma Thompson is so talented.

  5. "Sorry, there was an error licensing this video." why do i get this message with EVERY movie on this channel ?

  6. As a young single woman, I've learned from watching this masterpiece of a move that in love you have to practice self-control and not be entirely led by your emotions. Marriane showed her emotions so freely and was led by them in her relationship with Willoughby, while Elinor practiced self-control even in the most emotionally difficult situations ( When Mr. Edward came to see her and Miss Steele) While I understand that both methods are not perfect in every scenario, I hope to show my emotions while not being entirely led by them. I think this lesson is not only in love but in all of life.

  8. Richard Shelby of Huntley, Illinois was such a duplicitous cad as Willoughby and thought the OPC of Crystal Lake, Illinois would cloak hid sins, but God was not mocked, and God had the final word, as He always does, and Richard Shelby's sin found him out, as it always does, as God's Word says that it always does, but Richard Shelby had no "need" of God's Word, he thought so highly of himself and mistakenly believed that God could be mocked, as the gullible fools at the OPC in Crystal Lake were who coddled him to hell.

  9. Simply a GREAT story. I LOVE the classics – so much more depth to them than most movies today.

  16. Sense and sensibility is definitely the best Alan Rickman movie ever made with galaxy quest being a really close second because it was really cool seeing Alan Rickman playing a heroic character in both of those movies after he was typecast as an irredeemable villain in most of his movies. Alan Rickman is definitely missed these days but I’m happy we got to experience the joy he brought everyone with his movies. Sense and sensibility is also one of my favorite Kate Winslet movies along with eternal sunshine of the Spotless Mind with Jim Carrey because it’s really cool how she plays a nice lady who’s flawed but grows on you through the films which helps make it satisfying when her characters earn their happy endings. Kate Winslet did a good job with her crying scenes in both this movie and eternal sunshine of the spotless Mind. And Sense and sensibility is also one of my favorite Emma Thompson movies along with saving Mr. banks with Tom Hanks and Howard’s end because she did a good job with her performances in those movies and she definitely deserved both of her Oscars for adapting the sense and sensibility screenplay and her performance in Howard’s end. And Ang Lee was the perfect guy to direct sense and sensibility thanks to his directorial work on the wedding banquet and eat drink man woman. 😎

  17. Fanny Dashwood has to be one of the most odious women in English literature.

  18. Bc he truly loved her he became the most attractive man alive!! CB was extremely hot vs JW!!

  19. Emma Thompson was in her thirties and playing a girl of 19. She was excellent in the rule but could never be 19.

  20. Bloodletting was common for thousands of years. It was employed for medical treatment to rid the body of impure fluids to cure many conditions. Yet, in my opinion, It seems a barbaric medical treatment. It also seems that George Washington died from the effects of bloodletting. Source: Google.
